I have to admit that I struggled with Twilight in the middle. The author seemed to repeat the same tired dialogue between Edward and Bella, refusing to let the plot advance. This book should have been much shorter or their relationship should have progressed beyond the tired high schoolish lines. However, from the trip to Edward’s house on, I couldn’t put this book down and I can’t wait to read the next one.

I got this book not because I had any particularly strong interest in the topic (it was interesting enough) but because of all the buzz. I am very glad I did.
Like many other reviewers said, this book was a pleasure to read. It was a page turner and if I didn’t have a kid and full time job I would’ve finished this in 3 days. The pacing felt right and, though the topic is a serious one, the author manages to write a story that doesn’t feel overly heavy. You fall in love with the characters and you really feel a range of emotions while reading. I love stories that can access my emotions in that way.
I can understand the issues that some readers had with this. I had felt something similar when I read Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, a love story between 2 Asian Americans during the Japanese internment in WW2. As an Asian American I saw issues that the majority of readers did not see, but in the end I did appreciate the book for the important story about racism and the emotions. In Kathryn Stockett’s message at the end of the book she talks about why she wanted to tell this story, and she is humble in her assertion that she doesn’t presume she understands what it was like to be a black woman in Mississippi in the 60s. She just wanted to try and understand, and to tell the story she had always wanted to know more about herself. After reading that I felt much more empathy…in fact, I feel great admiration for her attempt to give voice to this story knowing the reactions she could get about race.
The main issue I had with the book is that, while I was reading it, I felt, “This has made-for-movie written all over it.” (and sure enough, when I checked, a movie was in production) I do feel that some of the characters are somewhat caricature-ish – Minny, for example, I feel I have seen more than once on tv or in the movies (she reminds me of the maid in the Jeffersons)- and the story has a kind of predictable flow and plot that lend itself easily to the big screen.

I bought this for my PS3 to connect to my new 40 Inch LCD TV and it worked out perfectly! Not only did I get a nice affordable cable but it worked perfectly! There’s not much of a lag and the images and sounds, sound great!

I was suffering a significant pavement ant infestation in my sunroom and garage. They were coming in from outside and I did not have the patience to wait for the Terro liquid baits to do their job.
I sprinkled this stuff along the perimeter of my garage and sunroom (outside, of course) and watched as the ants would literally walk up to it and then turn right around. They wouldn’t even attempt to step onto it, much less to cross it.

Any inclination to put Bruce Springsteen into the mold of being a shallow pop performer is wiped away after watching “Bruce Springsteen – VH1 Storytellers”.
“VH1 Storytellers” is a television program where singer-songwriters perform some of their songs and tell about the how and why of each song’s creation. One can argue that the program is more for the education and inspiration of budding songwriters than for fans of the artists invited to participate. Still, I’m reviewing this DVD version of “Bruce Springsteen – VH1 Storytellers” as a fan, not as an aspiring songwriter.
In this program Bruce sings eight songs, accompanying himself on guitar or piano. No band. On “Brilliant Disguise” he invites his wife Patti Scialfa to sing backup, but otherwise he is alone on the stage.
Between the songs Bruce tells the story behind each song. This results in about 40 minutes of music and 56 minutes of talk, at least for the PAL version of the DVD. (Timing may be a bit different on the NTSC version.)
Bruce’s discussion of his songwriting is very enjoyable, even confidence-inspiring. He comes across as a disarmingly honest person with perceptive insights into human nature. I found myself liking him a lot, much more than I had expected, having my prejudices regarding what show business and success does to people.
For example, Bruce mentions that he wrote up a lot of notes in preparation for this program. He then quips that on reviewing the notes he thought they made him sound very self-centered, and figured that for that purpose he didn’t need notes!
And when discussing “Thunder Road”, he dissects the line, “I got this guitar and I’ve learned how to make it talk.” His verdict: “Probably the hokiest line I ever wrote – and I’ve written a few of them, let me tell you!”
Bruce presents both serious songs and fun songs. The serious songs are followed up by serious discussions of personal ideals vs. politics and reality, the influence of religion (his Catholic background) on his

This has to be the best item I ever bought for myself! My wall to wall carpeting was so dirty after the contractors finished working in my family room. I saw this Steam/Vac spin scrubber on line and ordered it.
Let me tell you that the retrieval water was BLACK AND DIRTY.
I am so happy that I bought this cleaner that I believe I could become a spokesperson for this company. The cost of the scrubber more than pays for itself after the first use (considering the cost of professional cleaning.)
I love, love, love it!

A friend strongly recommended Water for Elephants to me, and after reading it I have to say that this novel is a fantastic read. Besides maybe a couple of not-so-interesting pages (no novel is perfect), it is fearlessly written, from the description to the plot itself. The ninety (or ninety-three) year old protagonist and narrator, Jacob, is one grumpy old man, yet the story of his life in the circus and, now, in a nursing home is intriguing.
Water for Elephants is well worth reading.
